:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Steve Pittelli -- Bluster and Bluff and Empty Show : Every few years, the scant evidence for genetic determinism will be promoted and sold in book form. In 2018, it was Robert Plomin’s “Blueprint.” The latest comes from psychologist and behavior geneticist, Kathryn Paige Harden, with her new book: “The Genetic Lottery - Why DNA Matters for Social Equality.” From the title alone, one can see that she will be selling a version of genetic determinism with a heart. To her credit, in contrast to Plomin, Harden addresses the ramifications of behavioral genetics’ historical association with eugenics in some detail, but her book is otherwise similar in substance to Blueprint (despite her own negative review of Blueprint). Both books spin polygenic scores as a savior for the failing field of behavioral genetics, with the dubious suggestion that these results are “causal.” ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from chris boutte -- Incredible book with important research for equality : I received an advanced copy of this book, and it’s so damned good. For most of my life, I believed in meritocracy even though I’ve personally seen how the “genetic lottery” can screw you. I’m a recovering drug addict who struggles with depression and anxiety, and these run in my family. On top of that, I’m one of those people where I have to work 10x as hard to lose weight. But because of my sobriety, I liked to tell myself that “working hard gets you where you need to go”. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. In this book, Kathryn Paige Harden does an incredible job laying down the foundation about how genes do and don’t affect us. There are many myths and misconceptions she debunks throughout the first part of the book, but she breaks down what the science actually says. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mcphersn -- Great premise : This is a difficult read. I agreed with the premise before I read the book, but I had to force myself to plow through the text. I’m not sure who is the target audience. Specialists will want to have more details, while the lay public will drown in technical issues. I did learn some things about behavioral genetics, but some crucial details are left hanging. For instance, how do the researchers rule out chance associations in their scan of the correlations? Is there any attempt to assess independent associations (e.g. simultaneous estimation rather than simple correlation)? Surely these things are addressed in the literature. I missed any serious discussion of the characteristics of the main dependent variable—education. I suspect that many readers will think that years of education mean vastly different things to plumbers and Harvard dropouts. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John.P.M -- Good book : Required reading for those who want a fairer and more just society, genes and destiny is something that will matter more and more in our future society's, this fascinating and easily accessible book gives you the basic knowledge to have an informed opinion on this subject. One of those books I hated finishing. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2021 )

Is a left-wing author allowed to believe in genetics?
