And I call it a love story, not a romance, because it's about so much more than romantic love. Twined up in this story is the love of freedom, honor, and friends. I love the squirrel and otter characters so to have one of them as the main hero always makes good books just a little better. Brian Jacques is a great writer and I love the way he does all the accents, especially Rakkety Tam McBurls. It's already clear that this book is going to have everything I love about the Redwall series but told in a way that's going to shake up the model and deliver a new pace to Jacques' classic format. The "formula" is good against evil, loyalty and honor with only the glory of a job well done and the genuine gratitude that goes to those who stand up for what good and right no matter what the bad guys promise. It is great. Old-fashioned morals and swashbuckling adventure set with believable animals in lives that praise the beauty of the natural world in clear, though often poetic, English.
